PUBLIC RECORDS REQUESTS

Consistent with the California Public Records Act, most records held by SHFPD are available for public inspection and copying. This page explains how to request records, what to expect, and how fees are handled.

How to Request Records

Please submit your request using the Public Records Request Form. Describe the records you're looking for as specifically as you can — including the subject matter, document type, and any relevant names or date ranges. [Contact Name/Title] is available to help you narrow your request if needed.

If you'd prefer to inspect records in person rather than receive copies, this can be arranged by appointment — just select that option on the form.

Response Timeframe

SHFPD will determine within 10 days of receiving a request whether it holds records responsive to your request, and will let you know the outcome and, if applicable, when the records will be available. In limited circumstances defined by law, this period may be extended by up to 14 additional days.

Fees

Digital copies of records are always free. If you'd like printed copies, we'll charge only the cost of printing — and we'll let you know that cost upfront before moving forward.

Records Available Online

Some records may already be posted on this website. If you're unable to access or use a record posted online, contact us and we will provide a copy directly.
